The island chain of
the Southern Isles reaches from Berneray in the north to Barra then Mingulay
and Barra Head in the south.
All of the islands are well known for their scenery and wildlife, and early June is a fantastic time to visit. The bird life is abundant and at race time, many are feeding young - from the wrens to the wading birds to the golden eagles. The machair flowers are putting on a good show, and the midgies have yet to emerge!
For those not luckly enough to live on these islands, you will either travel by sea or air to get here. There is a wide variety of accommodation on the island, and we have listed those closest to the start of the race.
The race times fit in with the ferry, but why not stay for longer and explore some of what the island has to offer.
